Research area

Microstructure and mechanical properties of silicon nitride based monolithic ceramics, ceramic matrix composites, nano-composites, layered composites and coatings. Microstructure and mechanical properties of MoSi2 and MoSi2+SiC. High temperature characteristics of brittle materials / creep, slow crack growth, oxidation, etc; Fractographic failure analysis of brittle materials. Prediction of the life-time and reliability of brittle materials. Pre-standardization and standardizationactivities in the frame of ESIS and VAMAS.
The Department coordinates the Centre of Nanostructured Materials, SAS (NANOSMART) which has been created from selected Departments of six Institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences with the aim to reach the critical mass for systematic research and development of nanostructured and ultrafine grained materials with extraordinary properties. The main objective of the Centre is to create a comprehensive frame for research and development of advanced metallic and ceramic materials with defined nanoscale structure and extraordinary properties for future scientific and industrial applications. The main scientific goal of the Centre is to understand physical phenomena in materials composed of nanosized building blocks occurring during their processing and to understand physical, mechanical and fracture phenomena during their testing and in practical applications.

Research Methods

  • Microstructure analysis – sample preparation using ceramography (grinding, polishing, etching)
  • Thin foil preparation (dimpling, ion bombardment) – optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray analysis, statistical analysis of microstructure parameters
  • Mechanical tests – four point bending test/Weibull analysis, fracture toughness (IF, IS, SENB, SEVNB), indentation fatigue, thermal shock, creep in bending and compression up to 1500 °C
  • Macro and microfractography, statistical analysis of fracture mechanisms
